What is DC charging (Level 3)?
DC stands for direct current, the type of power EV batteries store and use. Unlike AC charging, where the vehicle's onboard charger converts power from AC to DC, a DC charging station contains a large, powerful converter inside the unit itself. This lets the station deliver high-voltage DC power directly to the battery, bypassing the vehicle's converter entirely.
The result is a dramatic increase in charging speed: where AC Level 2 adds 30 to 80 km of range per hour, DC fast charging can add hundreds of kilometres in 20 to 30 minutes.
Fast vs ultra-fast: the two DC tiers
- Fast DC charging (50 to 150 kW): suited to public charging locations with moderate dwell times, such as retail parks and urban hubs.
- Ultra-fast DC charging (150 kW and above, up to 350 kW+): designed for motorway corridors and high-throughput commercial sites where minimal stop time is critical.
