Destination Charger
A destination charger is an AC charger placed where drivers already park for a few hours, such as a hotel, shop or workplace. It turns time that was already being spent into range, and turns parking into a service.
- A destination charger is an ACcharging point, typically Level 2, at a place drivers already plan to visit.
- Power usually ranges from 7 kW to22 kW, enough to add meaningful range over a visit of one to several hours.
- The goal is convenience ratherthan speed, which is what separates it from DC fast charging.
- Open standards, notably the Type 2connector in Europe, mean almost any EV can use one.
- For a business, it is an amenitythat attracts EV drivers and a revenue stream that needs pricing, accesscontrol and energy management behind it.
What is a destination charger?
EV charging does not always have to be a dedicated stop on a long journey. Often the most convenient time to charge is when you are already parked and busy doing something else. That is the simple but powerful idea behind destination charging: topping up your battery at the places you already planned to visit, such as hotels, shopping centres, restaurants and workplaces.
A destination charger is an AC charger, typically Level 2, placed at a location where drivers are expected to park for a significant period, usually one to several hours.
Unlike DC fast chargers, which are built for speed, the goal of a destination charger is convenience. It lets drivers add useful range while they work, shop, dine or stay overnight. For many businesses it is a key amenity for attracting and retaining EV-driving customers.
How does destination charging work?
Destination chargers are AC chargers that typically deliver between 7 kW and 22 kW. For the driver the process is straightforward: arrive, park, plug in, and get on with the visit.
Over the course of a stay, the charger supplies a steady flow of power that can replenish the energy used on the commute, or add enough range for the next leg of the journey. Some early destination networks were tied to a single car brand, but the modern approach is built on open standards such as the Type 2 connector used across Europe, so almost any EV can plug in.
Where Spirii comes in
Spirii’s platform is the software layer that turns a collection of chargers into a manageable, intelligent and profitable amenity. It gives a hotel, retailer or workplace the tools to offer destination charging and run it as a business.
- Control over access and pricing. In Spirii Connect you set the public price for a location, build tariffs that combine a base fee with conditional fees, and decide who charges where. Vouchers open access to guests on the terms you choose, and voucher groups apply the same access and price conditions across a group of users. For staff, charge keys tied to a voucher group keep charging limited to your own locations.
- Chargers that free up for the next driver. Rather than a blunt penalty, you can add a time fee that only starts after a session has run for a set period, counting both active charging and idle time once the car is full. Limit it to the hours where turnover matters, and the driver is warned in the app before it begins.
- Worry-free energy management. For sites with several chargers, dynamic load management distributes power using the circuit’s fuse capacity, each charger’s maximum power and how many vehicles are charging. It rebalances automatically as sessions start and stop, so you serve more drivers without overloading the building’s supply or paying for a grid upgrade.
- A simple experience for drivers. Guests and employees use Spirii Go to find your location, see live availability and handle payment. A guest enters a voucher code to unlock access at your price; an employee taps a charge key and the session lands against the right account. Public visitors arriving from another network can also charge over roaming.
- Insight you can act on. The Dashboard in Spirii Connect is the first page you land on, reporting usage, revenue and CO₂ saved for the period you choose, each figure set against the period before it. It is a clear view of how the service is performing and a useful input for stakeholder communication.
With Spirii, any business can become a charging destination, attracting high-value visitors and opening a new revenue stream on a platform that scales with the site.
